I’ve been using free classified ad sites like backpage and craigslist to make money online since late 2008/early 2009. I’ve promoted everything from affiliate products to my own ebooks and classes. Recently, I received the following question, which made me want to explain why placing free classified ads online is STILL a good way to make money on the web.

Post Free Ads Online: Question from a Newbie

I was just reading about your affiliate marketing on backpage offer and I was wondering if free classified ads like backpage are still an effective way to promote products? Do you still use backpage or have you moved on to other sites that you market products on.

2017 Update: I STILL use this method of internet marketing to make money online. See for some proof-of-income screen shots going back to 2009 from may PayPal account.

My Answer

I fired off a quick response, ie:

Free classified ads will always -- in my opinion -- be a good way to sell products and services online. This is true simply because it brings buyer and seller together in one place. As for how I market . . . I mainly use article marketing (and my own affiliate program) these days, ie, see

Following are three more reasons this is a good way to, in essence, make money online for free!

3 Reasons It’s a Good Idea to Use Free Classified Ad Sites to Make Money Online

I. Traffic: Free classified ad sites get a lot of traffic. How much? Following are some of the eye-popping stats just for two of the most popular free classified ad sites – backpage and craisgslist. has received an estimated 20,215,000 visits over the last 30 days (March-April 2013). The number of unique visits to also reached a 30-month high of 4 million in January [2013], up 2.1 percent from December. With this type of traffic, you’ve got a very important piece of the “make money online” puzzle in place – getting eyeballs to your offer.

II. Marketplace: Free classified ad sites are like malls and flea markets in that they’re a place where buyers AND sellers congregate to buy and sell goods and services.

And, that’s another piece of the puzzle to making money online in place. All you have to do is hang out your “shingle,” ie, place your ad – and you’re in business.

III. Market Research: The third reason it’s a good idea to post free ads online to earn money is that you can learn a lot just by perusing the ads there, eg, what types of goods and services are being offered, at what price, the types of ads that seem to pull well, etc. And all of this info is right at your fingertips – for free!

Conclusion on Making Money Placing Ads Online

As I said in the beginning of this article, I’ve been making money placing free classified ads online since late 2008/2009. And, while I do employ other tactics – eg, article marketing – this method is a go-to favorite because it usually means direct, immediate sales (with the right product/service at the right price).
