Iíve been writing, self-publishing and selling ebooks online since 2004. Iíve written well over 50. Even though Iím a freelance writer by trade, since 2010, over half my annual income has come from my ebook sales.

Following are three things Iíve learned over the years about selling ebooks online that increases sales and can have you earning $2,000 to $3,000 per month in no time (assuming youíre not writing junk).

1. Focus on a Niche: I write in tightly defined niches; ie, most of my ebooks are about freelance writing, internet marketing, small business and ebook publishing/writing.

The advantage of writing ebooks within a defined niche is that you get double the bang for your ebook marketing buck because you can cross-promote. For example, two of my titles are: (i) How to Write an Ebook in 3 Days, Market It and Start Getting Sales within a Week; and How to Create Ebook Covers for Less Than $5!

If someone bought one of these ebooks, thereís a good chance that theyíll be interested in the other. So, when Iím doing ebook marketing for one of these titles, itís very easy to stick in a link (ie, mention) the other beause they cover ďlike/complementaryĒ subject matter.

See what I mean?

You make more sales like this, which brings me to the next ebook selling tip . . .

2. Have Several Ebook Price Points: Using the example above, the ď3 DayĒ ebook retails for $19.95; the ďcreate ebook coversĒ sells for $6.97. By selling ebooks at several price points (eg, higher and lower), it makes it much more likely for a potential purchase more than one.

3. Publish ďa LineĒ of Ebooks: One of the things Iíve learned as a self publisher is that you have to produce more to sell more. My ebook sales started to dramatically increase after Iíd published 10-12. When I just had two or three titles, my sales werenít so hot.

Iím not saying that you canít do well with a few titles, but in my general reading on the web, Iíve heard this sentiment echoed by other self-publishers, ie, that you have to write more ebooks to get more sales.

Now that you know some concrete things you need to do to make money selling ebooks online, letís run some numbers to see how relatively easy it is to earn $2,000 to $3,000 per month.

The Numbers: How to Earn $2,000 to $3,000 Per Month Selling Ebooks

Letís say you sell your ebooks for $3.99 and publish them on Amazon for Kindle. As of this writing, your split would be 70%, which earns you about $2.80 for every ebook you sell. You only have to sell 1,000 ebooks per month (just 33 per day), to earn $2,800 (which is between $2K and $3K per month).

So, how many ebooks do you have to write to get to this goal? Letís say you wrote one every two months Ė thatís 6 in one year. All youíd have to do is sell 5.5 copies per day -- of each title Ė to reach your ebook selling goal.

Ebook Selling Tip: Write on evergreen topics in tightly defined niches, eg, career advice for college graduates, dating advice for women over 40, how to build credit advice for those whoíve filed bankruptcy, etc.

If you follow this advice and put together (and follow) an effective ebook marketing plan, you can start earning "quit your day job" money for many (eg, $2,000 to $3,000 per month). Lots of work? Yes. Worth it? Oooohhhhh yeah!
