SEO content writing is a booming niche for freelancers – one where some very good money can be made. I’ve been doing it since 2007 and it literally transformed how I run by freelance business. It’s practically the only type of writing my firm handles for clients these days, and the best part is it can be done from anywhere – as long as you have an internet connection.

Even though my company has been providing clients with this type of content for a few years, many freelancers still don’t offer the service. And, for those who are new to freelancing, they may not even know what it is at all. So, following is a detailed explanation of what SEO content writing is.

Before we begin, one thing you should know is that SEO writers are known by several names, eg, SEO copywriters, SEO content providers and SEO article writers, to name the most popular.

What Does "SEO" Stand For?

SEO is the acronym for search engine optimization. All this seemingly highly technical phrase means is doing certain things to a web page / web site so that it shows up higher in a search engine’s organic (ie, unpaid) search results.

FYI, the three major search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing (MSN). Google is by far the most popular. Proof?

Google remains the big dog with close to 67 percent market share (which is up slightly from comScore's last report). Microsoft is in a distant second place with 15.4 percent and Yahoo! is falling behind with 13 percent. So, if you're optimizing your website or reviewing your search engine rankings, in most cases, you should focus primarily on Google, then Bing, and then Yahoo. You need to know this because you have to follow search engine guidelines when writing SEO content. Hence, knowing which ones deliver the most traffic is extremely important so that you don’t run afoul of their rules.

What Does All of This Have to Do with Writing SEO Content?

First, search engine optimization is a process. And, there are many components to that process. There are many things that a website owner can/should do to increase their site’s visibility in search results. Some of these include writing meta tags, getting backlinks, and blogging (there are many more).

But, let’s stick with content (eg, blogging, writing web articles). Writing SEO’d content (eg, search engine optimized content) is what many consider the foundation of increasing a website’s visibility. And this is where SEO writing professionals can make a lot of money – if they have the skills needed to provide this service to clients.

Following is exactly what SEO content is; it’s explained by way of example.

Let’s say you were an SEO writer and you had a website. You want to get clients, right? The thing most people do when they look for stuff online is go to their favorite search engine (eg, Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) and type in some words. These words are known as keywords (aka keyword phrases).

So if they’re looking for a firm to provide SEO content, one keyword phrase they might start with is “SEO writing company.” Once they type this in, a whole bunch of results will pop up -- paid and non-paid (ie, organic) results.

Then, they’ll start clicking.

One way for your site to show up high in search results (eg, on the first three pages of Google) so that you have a chance of having prospects check out your site is to have lots of content on your site with the keyword phrase “SEO writing company” in it.

As an aside, you don’t want just any content; you want to create useful, informative content that will make clients want to contact you for further info and/or to outright hire you to write SEO content for their firm.

FYI, statistics prove that most people don’t click on links past the first three pages of Google. Proof?

And this is SEO content writing in a nutshell; producing content that has keyword phrases in it that drives traffic to a given site/blog so that sales / leads can follow.

My company shows up on the first page of Google for the keyword phrase "SEO writing company"; it's in the number three position (as of this writing). My old blog (InkwellEditorial.blogspot.com) is in the first position for this keyword phrase and one of my ebooks on SEO writing is in the fifth spot. This is not by accident.

I target certain keywords and produce content so that my site(s) will stay high in search results for those phrases. Search results change all the time by the way; this is why companies always need new content – and why skilled SEO writers can make good, consistent money as a freelancers.

Why It's So Easy to Make Money Online When You Learn How to Write SEO Content

You have to know the mechanics to be an effective SEO article writer, eg, how often to use the keyword phrase, where it should appear in the copy, what are secondary keyword phrases, how long the content should be, how to conduct keyword research, where to put anchor text, etc.

An in-depth SEO content writing class can provide you with this. It's so much easier to make money online once you know how to write SEO content because you learn, in essence, how search engines find and rank sites. This is the foundation of knowing how to market online; it's like having the keys to the online money-making kingdom!

You can use this knowledge to make money in affiliate marketing, by creating and promoting your own products (eg, ebooks), by providing content for write-for-pay sites – and this is in addition to clients you take on as a freelance SEO writer.
