I’ve been selling ebooks online since 2004 and I can tell you from first-hand experience that writing an ebook is the easy part. It’s after it’s written that the real work comes. But, the good news is, it’s so easy to make money from your self-published works – if you’re willing to put in the work. Following are three things I’ve learned over the years that sell ebooks.
I. Name It Correctly – or Forget Sales: One successful ebook coach said that the title you choose for your ebook can impact your sales by as much as 30 percent. Long before I knew this, one of the things I have always agonized when writing an ebook is the title. That’s because it can make or break sales. This is particularly true in the genre I write in; the “how to” niche.
Most of my ebooks dispense information on how to become a freelance writer, how to self-publish ebooks, how to make money online (internet marketing); and how to market online (search engine optimization).
Naming your ebook tip: As I write non-fiction, I don’t try to be cute or fancy when naming my ebooks. I get straight to the point. One of my best-selling ebooks is How to Write an Ebook in 3 Days, Market It & Start Getting Sales Within a Week – Really! See what I mean? Is there any doubt as to what this ebook is about?
II. Learn the Skills of the Self-Publishing Trade: As I said in the beginning of this article, writing an ebook is the easy part; there’s a lot to be done after, eg: designing the cover, converting it into different file formats to sell via different outlets; getting a website/blog done to promote it; creating and following an ongoing marketing plan; determining how to price it; etc.
If you don’t know how to set up a wordpress blog, how to create a professional ebook cover; how to promote your ebook online; how to price it to start getting sales; etc., you won’t make any sales (or very few) because all of this is just as important as writing an ebook.
To be successful selling ebooks online, you must learn how to do all of this yourself. It’s not hard, and the best part is, once you learn, you can go on to write and sell as many ebooks as you want once you have the basic skills under your belt.
Many ebook authors get stuck in the beginning phase and never realize their dream of making money by selling their own ebooks – because they never take the time to learn the necessary skills.
III. Learn How to Monetize Your Ebook: After writing an ebook, there are so many ways to monetize it, eg, turning it into an audio ebook (eg, mp3 file); an online seminar; an in-person seminar; a web-conferencing seminar; partnering with other authors to sell more; etc.
Some ebook authors make a full-time living from one or two ebooks – because they monetize them in so many ways.
There’s a lot that goes into successfully selling ebooks online. But once you get the basic skills under your belt, how much you earn is up to you. Since 2010, over half my annual income has come from ebooks I write and self-publish – and now that I’ve begun monetizing my titles more, that’s increasing.
